The Arts-in-Education Program

Partnering with the Glynn County School System, GIAHA brings professional artists directly to the elementary and middle schools in Glynn County for workshops, residencies, performances and more. This program is free for the schools because it is funded by GIAHA and the Glynn County Board of Education.

Student Mural Kids Dromedary
Burroughs-Molette Elementary School students create a mural with visual artist Jonathan Miller. Artists and performers delight and inspire young children with school visits. The musical duo Dromedary educates and entertains students at Glyndale Elementary.

Why is arts education valuable?

Arts education is not just about teaching someone to draw a picture or play an instrument. Arts education is about…

  • Building thinking skills: analysis, evaluation and critical judgment
  • Nourishing imagination and creativity
  • Recognizing the importance of process
  • Acquiring collaborative skills
  • Fostering an appreciation for diversity
  • Developing such valuable personal traits as self-confidence and self-discipline

What kind of programs are available?

  • Visual arts
  • Creative writing
  • Dance
  • Music
  • Theater
  • Storytelling
  • Workshops created to meet your needs

How do I bring an artist to my school?

  • Decide if you want local artists to visit your school or have a regional artist come in for a week-long residency.
  • Each school may have 23 programs or classes (45-60 minutes each) by one or more local artists or a one-week residency (four sessions of 45-60 minutes per day for five days) by one artist in any discipline.
  • A directory of artists is available by contacting GIAHA at 262-6934 or email: executivedirector@goldenislesarts.org.

Summer Theater Camp at the Ritz

Theater classes are not only for those who want to be on stage; they’re also a great way to enhance concentration, discipline and social and interpersonal skills…and terrific fun!

Four summer camp sessions for 2010
(all sessions are for two weeks, Monday-Friday, 9 am - Noon, culminating in a free public performance):

  • June 7-18 - "On the Spot with Improv" Ages 13-18. Taught by Kelly Dobbin
Using improvisational games, students will learn how to "jump in there and let go!" Open to all levels of experience, this fun and sometimes crazy session will culminate in a unique performance where two teams battle for laughs and points as they make up scenes, games, and songs on the spot.
  • June 21-July 2 - "Acting for the Stage" Ages 7-12. Taught by Heather Heath
Explore the world of acting on stage through theater games, improvisation, and scripted material. Participants will create and perform their own play at the end of the two-week session.
  • July 5-16 - "On the Spot with Improv" Ages 7-12. Taught by Kelly Dobbin
    See above.
  • July 19-30 - "The Play's the Thing" Ages 10-18. Taught by Kelly Dobbin
This session is open to students who have experience in performing on stage. Using scripted material, participants will focus on further developing such acting skills as creating character, vocal techniques, and more. A showcase of scenes will show off their talent at the end of the two-week session. Requirements for participants: audition, participation in prior summer theater camps or actual production experience.

The fee for each two-week session is $150 if registered before June 1 and $175 for registrations after June 1.  Parents can also sign their children up for two or more sessions for only $125 each.
