EUGENIA PRICE/JOYCE BLACKBURN FOUNDATION
YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS AWARD GUIDELINES

This award is to encourage and recognize the literary talents of all public and private middle grade students in Glynn County. Originality, creativity, content, and understanding of the art form will be the basis of the judges' decisions.

The student's work will be "blind judged" by a panel made up of writers and theater professionals. The students' names and schools will be deleted from their manuscripts before being sent to the judges to ensure impartiality.

The winning playwrights will receive:
1st Prize: $500 cash and production of play.
2nd Prize: $300 cash and production of play.
3rd Prize: $200 cash and staged reading of the play.

All three winners will workshop their plays with theatre professionals which may include readings and re-writes.  Productions and readings will be cast and staged following this process and the winning plays will be showcased on a date to be announced in late April or early May 2012.

GUIDELINES

  1. Students submitting work must be in either 6th, 7th or 8th grade or the equivalent.
  2. Students that want to participate must either attend a playwriting workshop conducted by GIAHA or review and follow a study guide provided by GIAHA covering the basics of playwriting.  Playwriting workshops will be scheduled in September/October 2011. (call GIAHA at 262-6934 or email us to schedule a workshop or for more information).
  3. The work must be submitted in script form, typed or printed (ink only), double spaced, on one side of the paper only. The play may be any length. VERY IMPORTANT: Submit a cover sheet with the title of the work, student's name, address, phone number, school name and teacher's name. Include this information only on the title page and not on the script itself.
  4. Work cannot be the result of a classroom project under the supervision of a teacher. Plays may be based on original short stories written by the student.
  5. Plays may be written by more than one student (two or more students collaborating). If the winning play is by more than one student, the prize money will be divided up between the winners; i.e. if the 1st place script is written by two students, each will receive $250.00.
